How to Choose the Best Cot Mattress for Your Baby

Your baby will spend a lot of time sleeping, so choosing the right mattress is just as important as selecting the perfect cot bed. A good mattress supports healthy growth, ensures comfort, and promotes safe sleep. But with so many options out there, how do you know which one is best? Let’s break it down.

The Right Fit: Snug and Secure

The mattress should fit your cot bed perfectly, with no gaps around the edges. A gap of more than 2cm can be dangerous, as it increases the risk of your baby getting trapped.
Measure your cot bed carefully before buying, and look for baby mattresses designed to fit standard sizes like
120 x 60 cm or 140 x 70 cm. Check the recommended mattress depth for your cotbed to ensure a perfect fit.

Natural vs. Synthetic Materials

When it comes to materials, you have two main options: natural or synthetic.

  • Natural mattresses are made from materials like organic cotton, coconut fibre and wool. They’re breathable, hypoallergenic, and free from chemicals, making them a great choice for sensitive skin. At Mokee, our Natural Cotbed Mattress is crafted with eco-friendly materials, offering a safe and sustainable sleep solution.

  • Synthetic mattresses, like those made from foam, are extremely breathable, lightweight, affordable, and still a safe option. Some foam mattresses even include added benefits, such as aloe vera for extra comfort.

Both options have their merits, so it’s about finding what works best for your baby and your budget.

Safety First: Firmness is Key

A firm mattress is essential for your baby’s safety. It reduces the risk of suffocation and provides the right support for their developing spine. But what does "firm" actually mean? Let’s break it down by material and density, which is measured in kg/m³.

  • Foam Mattresses:
A good foam mattress for babies should have a density of at least 20 kg/m³. Higher density foam (e.g., 25-30 kg/m³) offers better durability and support, making it a great choice for long-term use.
  • Coconut Fibre Mattresses:
These mattresses are always a high level of firmness, especially when the fibres are combined with natural latex. Look for a minimum density of 48 kg/m³

Always check that the mattress meets BS EN 16890 safety standards, which test for firmness, durability, and breathability. This ensures your baby’s mattress is both safe and comfortable.

Waterproof Protection for Hygiene

Accidents are inevitable with babies, so keeping the mattress clean and hygienic is a must. While some mattresses come with removable and washable covers, others, like organic mattresses, may not. In all cases, it is recommended to use a waterproof mattress protector.

  • Why Use a Protector?

    • Prevents stains, spills, and moisture from seeping into the mattress.

    • Keeps the mattress hygienic and extends its lifespan.

    • Easy to remove and wash, ensuring a clean sleep surface for your baby.

Hypoallergenic Options

If your baby has sensitive skin or allergies, a hypoallergenic mattress can make all the difference. Look out for natural materials like organic cotton and wool, which are naturally hypoallergenic. Coconut husk (coir) and wool are dust-mite resistant and also naturally fire retardant. This means no added chemicals need to be added to ensure the mattress is fire safe.

Budget Considerations

While it’s tempting to go for the cheapest option, remember that a mattress is an investment in your baby’s health and comfort. High-quality mattresses may cost more upfront, but they’re often more durable and safer in the long run.
